Formed as a partnership in 1975 by Stephen Leadbitter and Bill Lawson, stephens fresh foods ltd originally traded as Stephens Bacon Company, supplying the retail trade with quality bacon, ham and other meat products.Now stephens is a major supplier (mainly to wholesale style customers) - a cooked meat manufacturer - with an extensive range of cooked traditional hams (manufactured on the premises) along with an extensive range of cooked beef products. In addition, we are able to provide a complete range of charcuterie direct from continental Europe. In 1985, the company moved to a new purpose built, multi-temperature facility in Chatham Kent, to concentrate on the full time production of slicing, packaging and manufacturing traditionally cooked, hams. Cures are continually developed and reviewed to ensure optimum quality, flavour and textures. We like to consider our development ideas are always ahead of the game - for example we reduced salt levels in our products as early as 1986! Today these facilities extend to 15,000 sq ft and have been extensively modernised to EU approved standards, with a newly constructed high-risk finished goods unit that operates fully to HACCP systems. Handling chilled and ambient foods, the strictest monitoring systems are enforced and all staff are trained to recognised CIEH standards. We are committed to the highest standards of quality and food safety and are accredited against B.R.C Global standard for food (v5.0). Product is monitored with daily microbial testing during production in our on site Labcred standard accredited laboratory, where test results or certificates are available, along with full product specifications.
At stephens we prefer to use ENGLISH legs of pork. Sourced from selected farms in the South of England. We are proud to say that our suppliers adhere to the highest humane standards during rearing and at slaughter. All our meats are from traceable sources. We are now proud to announce our membership of the Produced in Kent organisation. We are committted to the promotion of locally produced goods, utilising locally sourced raw materials and distributed through local supply chains. Why not ask us about our local specification hams? Quality standards and proof of good practice, are important in the manufacture of food products. The British Retail Consortium (B.R.C) accreditation, is deemed to be the ultimate accreditation for our industry. sff ltd achieved a 1st time pass in December 2002.
